Invisible Illness- Look beyond what you see

If you see me out to dinner with my friends…

It took a whole day beforehand of laying on the couch to rest up for it.

If you see me at church on Sunday…

It’s because I turned down all Saturday night plans so I wouldn’t be too tired

If you see me at my child’s birthday party..

It’s because I spent two weeks slowly getting ready for it one thing at a time

If my makeup and hair are done and I look really great…

It’s because I’m feeling terrible and I don’t want you to know it.

If I cancel plans at the last moment…

I’m not being lazy, I’m literally too sick to get out of bed.

If you see pictures of me on vacation having the time of my life…

You aren’t seeing the pictures of me laying on the bed for two days before and after.

If you come over and see how clean my house is…

It’s because you can’t see my bedroom and bathroom that I never have the energy to clean.

If I go out of my way to do something thoughtful for you…

It’s because I’m feeling good that day and I want to take the chance to help someone else. It’s not because I’m always okay or because I’m cured.

If I say I can’t do something…

Then I really physically can’t do it, I’m not just trying to wiggle out of something.

I have an invisible illness. I’m not faking, pretending, hysterical, selfish, or anything else. Some days I’m okay and some days I’m not and I have little to no control over it. That’s my life

  1. I love this post so much. I think we need to make it into a meme. So often our loved ones only see us at our best (and of course we pretend we are "just fine") so they have no idea what it took to get us looking so "good".
