Ness from A Girl With Five Lads came up with the idea of a blog hop about the lives of the chronically ill outside being sick. Often when you have a chronic illness it’s too easy to get wrapped up in being sick and how it defines your whole life. According to Ness, “The aim of #besidesmydiagnosis is to share self-love and appreciation for people who need to feel they are more than their diagnosis.”
I am definitely more than my diagnosis. There are so many things people don’t know about me because they have only known me since I got sick. So here’s some information about me that doesn’t involve my illness.
1. #besidesmydiagnosis the three things about my appearance that I love in the mirror?
My eyes, my skin, my smile.
2. #besidesmydiagnosis the things I have read most are?
This biography of Alexander Hamilton has been my friend of late. I’m very slowly making my way through it. My all time favorite books are, “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society,” “The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet,” and “The Blue Castle.” That’s just a small sampling though, at any given time I’m probably reading at least two books if not more. Reading is my life.
3. #besidesmydiagnosis my favourite comfort foods are?
I love homemade bread. I make it at least once a week because bread is my happy place. It’s even better if I have a bowl of soup to dip it in, although it’s generally too hot where I live to eat soup.
4. #besidesmydiagnosis my favourite past times are?
Reading, enjoying the outdoors, traveling, anything adventurous. Ideally I would combine all of these things at once!
5. #besidesmydiagnosis my biggest accomplishment since illness is?
This is a hard one since I feel most of my accomplishments happened before I got sick (I was awesome). I suppose my blog and my freelance writing is an accomplishment. It’s not something I thought I would ever do. I have a degree in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism so I thought at this point in my life I would be creating recreation programs for kids. My former English teachers would probably laugh to hear that I’m now a writer.
6. #besidesmydiagnosis I feel my best quality is?
I am an excellent listener. If you need someone to vent to, I’m the person to see!
7. #besidesmydiagnosis my motto/mantra to live by?
Do the right thing, even if it isn’t popular. Have faith in yourself and who you are.
8. #besidesmydiagnosis I would love to travel to?
I’ve been lucky enough to travel some (that’s me above, in Rome), but I have a long list of other places I want to see. I’ve been to France, Italy, Greece, Spain, and Turkey so I think next on my list is Germany. I also want to go back to France, Italy, Greece, Spain, and Turkey! Other places I want to go: New Zealand, Australia, all of Great Britain, China, Tahiti, Portugal, Austria, and more. Really I want to go everywhere. It’s hard being an American and stuck on this continent (I have also been to Canada and Mexico several times, I would definitely go back to Canada).
9. #besidesmydiagnosis my guilty pleasure is?
Carbs, all the carbs. I could give up sugar or chocolate in a minute, but not carbs.
10. #besidesmydiagnosis I have many dreams and ambitions such as?
To get a Masters Degree, or to end up working in the field my degree is in.
